Link Text
Links are an important consideration in SEO.
The two types of links we’re concerned with today are those on a page of your site pointing to another page on your site, and then there are those links from other websites pointing to a page on your site.
Do Not: Use the text "Click Here".
Search Engines do put weight on what we call "Link Text" – the text that is usually blue and underlined that the user will click on to be taken to the link destination.
What text should you use? Consider the page that is being linked to. First, make sure you optimize that linked-to page. Next consider what is your top keyword or keyword phrase for that destination page. It is this keyword that you want to use as your Link Text to that page.
You have full control over the links within your site. And you actually do have some potential control over the links to your pages from other sites. Obviously using SMO (Social Media Optimization) is obviously a good idea; linking to your pages from Social Media sites, like Facebook, MySpace, etc. And in lots of these scenarios you have full control over the Link Text, so take advantage of it.
For those other scenarios, when you are simply being linked to, it’s a good idea to contact the webmaster of that linking site and firstly thank them for linking to you, and then respectfully ask them to change the Link Text to your targetted keyword.
Now, young optimizer, go forth and link that keyword text!
