AirTran Sale – Atlanta has Sky Marketing genius
AirTran Sale
UPDATE:
Now with Photos!
What’s this about? Marketing in Atlanta’s overhead skies this morning and a somewhat genius move by AirTran, I’d say.
Shortly after my girlfriend went out the front door this morning, she rushed back in, saying “Come see this! And grab the camera!”
So I dashed outside and looked up in the sky, where she was pointing. And saw “AIRTRAN”… It took us a few moments to figure out the word, because it was written in all CAPS, the letters were very close together…And it was upside-down (which was part of the genius, which I will get to in a moment). So we were playing a guessing game of what code ARTH could be…till we finally read it correctly, and as the plane kept “writing”.
She began shooting photos of this eerie marketing phenomenon, until we realized the message was complete and the plane was flying away…AIRTRAN SALE
When I got back inside, I did a Google Search on the terms, and saw a marketing campaign, geared towards those exact search terms…And realized the genius of it all.
Not only had this all been planned out – the public seeing the message, then doing a curious search, then being brought to the campaigns landing pages, but the upside down thing; thinking of where I was standing, the only way to read it right-side up, would be if you were traveling from the North to the South, in Atlanta. And if you live in Atlanta, you know this importance…especially the timing.

The time was approximately 8:45 am – morning rush hour. The day? Wednesday. Hump Day…When people would love to be considering a cheap vacation…
Target Marketing. Driving offline to online. The curiosity factor.
Well played, AirTran, very well played.
UPDATE:
Look at what Google listings are out there about this – might be sneaky tactics (although I still gotta say “Well Played, AirTran”
)
