An Introduction to SEO - Search Engine Optimization
Most people have either a very superficial understanding of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), or perhaps an antiquated one; and, as with many things, a little (or dated) information, can sometimes be a bad thing.
SEM vs. SEO
As you may or may not know, SEM or Paid Search Inclusion, is the process of purchasing advertising spots within the Search Engines. You enter a term(s) into the query box, press enter, and along the right side (and/or the top) of the "organic" results, comes up those gray boxes containing advertisements. This aspect of search manipulation is faster to implement than traditional or organic SEO, but is also more intrusive and actually has a lower conversion rate than its natural partner. SEM is a "push" methodology.
SEO, on the other hand, is a "pull" methodology. Some will throw both methodologies into one category - either labelled SEM or SEO, and distinguish the two by saying something like "paid vs. organic (or natural)". For our purposes here, I will keep to the traditional names of SEM and SEO. Back on to What SEO is.
Push vs. Pull in Online Marketing
The idea here is simple. "Push" is a bit intrusive. Whatever is being pushed is not something we are looking nor asking for at the time. Mailers, Fliers, TV & Radio commercials, Email and Banner advertisements; or the kid behind you in line who gives you a hefty shove. None of these did we actually ask for. There they are however, and sometimes, a little smart marketing might inspire us to do something - even if it is only to recognize the brand. Pushing your marketing message or brand identity out there is really a great and obvious thing to do - but it may not be what your prospect is searching for, and this where the "pull" methodology comes in.
Again, another simple idea. "Pull" your prospects in; sweeten the honey or, as we like to say here at CSKnet, "Build a Better Net".
Now just how do we go about doing that? By optimizing your collateral of course.
What is Search Engine Optimization? Is it Marketing?
SEO is... Or Better than Marketing)
Search Engine Optimization generally has the goal of getting a website to have higher placement in the Search Engines Results Pages, or SERPS. Getting a site to have a higher ranking than their competition, or more specifically, to have a high rank for a particular search term or keyword, is of obvious benefit.
- A "pull" methodology
- Not A bag of tricks
- Extremely cost-effective
- Not simply Title and Meta tags
- Is about relevant content (to the searcher, not your marketing campaign)
- Good on ROI
- Not about PageRank
- An on-going process
- Not ways to "trick" the Search Engines
- A better conversion rate provider than its paid partner
- Not done simply for a "site"
- Possible on ANY type of file
- More than high ranking in SERPS
- Involves on-page and off-page factors
- Something you should definitely think about
- Available in Atlanta, GA
- Not dead
It's all this and more. Search Engines look at the text and the code on the pages of your website. And that means that you have to think about Content, Development, Design and more.
