CSK
CSKnet is home on the web to Craig S. Kiessling of Atlanta, GA; consulting on SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Internet Marketing, Development and more. Originally, its sole purpose was to showcase my work on the web - a place to point potential employers and/or clients.
Two issues quickly became apparent, however. Potential employers would visit the site and ask me why I wanted to leave my present company - CSKnet. Yes, I can be hired on a consultancy basis, and I outsource if needed - but that's not the complete image I wanted to present.
Another problem was that my old personal site had unfortunately been neglected for many years, and did not reflect my current life. So by slowly & strategically merging my personality into my professional image, I'm hoping that potential employers/clients, as well as people in general, are able to get a better handle on just who I am.
CSKnet also obviously makes a nice sandbox for me to play in - a place for my thoughts, ranging across all things in my life - not just web-hype (okay, sure - there's a good bit of that in here too).
The Name
CSK are the initials of my name - "Craig S. Kiessling". For now, you'll have to guess on the S. The "net" part seems quaint and cliche. And yes, it started out that way (CSK.com and CSK.net were taken), but grew into something much more interesting and vital.
The Logo
Web with a spin. Data plus People. Depth & Dynamics. Grey Monitor and Green Life - the net is about more than just "computer stuff".
And then of course, there's also the hint of it pulling you in.
Conventions used on CSKnet
If you've been on the Internet for long enough, then you know how to handle a website. A couple of things that you might want to take note of, however:
Navigation & Links
Getting around...There is the menu at the top left, aptly named Navigation. There are text links to the major areas in the footer, as well. Some pages, like this one, will have internal nanigation menu items in side-bars at the top. You will also find internal links to relevant pages on the site, as well as links to external resources - both in the textual content, and in the left & right sides. All of this is fairly standard on the internet, and easy to use & understand.
More Information
I make use of some tags and attributes to provide better accessibility & usability, but also to provide you with more information about certain things.
If I quote some text verbatim from another website, or perhaps from a book, song, etc., then I will provide a link for you to go to the original source, or to learn more.
Also take note of annoying Acronyms. They are defined at least once on the site, but for quick reference, you can usually just mouse over the acronym or abbreviation to see what the letters actually mean, like this example with HTML.
Colophon
Although the word was the original Greek name of an ancient Ionian city, a Colophon in publishing terms generally describes the details of a book. As explained in the Wikipedia,
This information generally includes the typefaces used, and often the names of their designers; the paper, ink and details of the binding materials and methods may also receive mention. In the case of technical books, a colophon may specify the software used to prepare the text and diagrams for publication. Detailed colophons are a characteristic feature of limited edition and private press printing.
General
The Internet can be viewed as an electronic publishing media, so websites sometimes will also have Colophons, like we have here. Here you will find the nuts & bolts of this site - what goes in to making it all happen.
People (Craig S. Kiessling of Atlanta)
Craig S. Kiessling pretty much took care of everything from design, development, and content; sources are cited where origin is elsewhere.
Hosting
The friendly folks at Number One Hosting have provided me with excellent service - the technology is there and the people are genuine.
Typography
CSK Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, and sans-serif font families with a size of 22 pixels.
net 18 pixel Courier font.
Build... Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, and sans-serif at 14 pixels with added margins & letter-spacing.
In short, the rest of the site, including headings, text, navigation, etc. you will find to be of varying sizes, colors, weights, etc., of the font-families comprising the Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, and sans-serif grouping.
Design
Being in it's second version, CSKnet has retained its original color palette, made up of varying degrees between black & white, with bursts of Greens & Blues thrown in. This color scheme itself represents much of what I am trying to say in many different areas, but I will let you play with that poem on your own.
If you would like to know the exact hex-codes for the colors in the pallete, get Firefox, install the Colorzilla extension, and roll-over each color-swatch with your mouse.
Development
CSKnet is built making use of the PHP server-side language, as well as other languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript (Does not break anything if JavaScript is turned off, etc. in browser), DHTML, XHTML, Perl, etc.
Data stored in a MySQL database, sometimes using phpMyAdmin, and sometimes not.
CSKnet is hosted by Number One Hosting on a Windows server.
Thanks to the two major browsers, Firefox (not to metion some super helpful extensions) and Internet Explorer, debugging has been made easier.
Moving files back and forth made possible with SmartFTP.
Web Standards
Behind the scenes, the development is based on W3C Recommendations, specifically XHTML 1.0 Transitional and CSS 2.1. CSKnet also conforms to the WCAG, the W3C's accessibility guidelines.
